When I was in Spain in September I read a book called Mighty Be Our Powers by Leymah Gbowee and I have to say, it made me think a lot about my perspective on life.
For those of you that haven’t read the book, Leymah was a young girl from Liberia who witnessed the Civil war that broke out and after watching her dreams crumble right in front of her, and praying every night she would walk up the next morning, she and thousands of other women decided to stand up and fight to end the war. Leymah shared her personal struggle with domestic violence and alcohol addiction, as well as the difficulties of being an activist, but eventually she built an army of women who were determined to stop the war.
I cried a lot while I was reading Mighty Be our Powers because I could feel her pain and her struggle but at the same time I admired the strength she found and her determination to stand up and fight knowing fully well that doing so put her and her family at risk.
It’s the most inspirational book I have ever read and I would highly recommend it to anyone especially those who are going though a difficult period in their life. A documentary was also made which I watched after I finished the book, its called Pray the Devil Back to Hell so check that out as well.
