Born in Kenya and now living in Brooklyn, New York, Mutu’s work represents the thoughts that go on in peoples minds which results in erotic-like/grotesque pieces. Her work explores the female body representing views on african women in the contemporary society. She also explores the idea of cultural identity, and her views on it, believing that a person’s cultural identity is not solely determined by geography but by factors one can determine and change. She does not consider herself an ‘african artist’ that is inspired by her cultural background, instead she tries to build her own culture, a vision of what the future holds. Mutu is clearly an artist that has gone global with exhibitions at major institutes in the U.S, London,France and Austria.
