Zwelethu Mthethwa is a South African photographer that I first discovered in 2011 when I went to the Victoria and Albert Museum for the Figures and Fiction exhibition. It was a collaboration of 17 SA based photographers that captured the lives/evolution of the people. Mthethwa’s work from ‘The Brave Ones’ stood out for me because it refers to a community that is different. The young men are wearing Scottish clothes and men’s shoes. This series touches on gender and identity and how South African people are getting more and more courageous about who they really are. It also touches on the historical facts about the country, when the Scottish army invaded the Cape. Their influence can still be seen in the local tribes such as the Zulu’s.
