We are the Arab Springs…

Named after the ancient book Shahnameh (The Book of Kings) – a long poem of epic tragedies written between c. 977 and 1010 AD by the Persian poet Ferdowsi – Shirin Neshat’s photographic series, The Book of Kings, is a contemporary narrative of the Iranian and Arab youth of today captured in stark black and white photographs with her signature calligraphy over each subject’s face and body.  Excerpts from contemporary poetry by Iranian writers and prisoners are delicately inscribed over the photographs, further highlighting the intensity, tragedy and defiance in each subject’s face.  While the photographs are meant to convey the victims of the current turmoil in Iran and the Arab uprisings, Neshat’s arresting images instead illuminate the strength and power of the masses and the patriots.
